Most Federal Employees are surprised when they are placed on a PIP. Most Federal Employees are placed on a PIP because they don’t communicate their performance to their supervisors, don’t adequately document or record their performance to their managers, or don’t approach their annual appraisals in such a way that encourages their managers to give them higher ratings. Unsuccessful completion of the Performance Improvement Period could lead to demotion or removal from your Federal employment. Throughout the years of supervising employees, representing Agencies and Federal Employees in Performance Removal and Demotion actions before the Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB), I have developed a method that helps Federal Employees navigate the PIP with less stress and more confidence.
