What I learned about the VA eBenefits System.

At a recent Veterans Law conference, I had the opportunity to hear a presentation by the VA Compensation Director, Thomas J. Murphy.

One of the many topics that Director Murphy touched on was the eBenefits system.  What is the eBenefits system?

So I am guessing that the VA is tired of spending time updating Veterans on the status of their claims on the phone - especially when Veterans can call several different facilities several times per week, creating confusion.  Additionally, the VA has Regional Offices that are in the process of converting the Veterans Compensation and Benefits process to an electronic - not paper - process.

Enter the "eBenefits system".  Go to the VA eBenefits system, register and activate your account, and you are on the way to having much quicker access to VA Benefits information.  I have spent a good bit of time exploring my own eBenefits system account, and here is what I like:

1) Veterans can find out the status of their VA benefits service-connection appeal immediately, by clicking a couple buttons.

2) Veterans can request and view their Military Service Records online (I did this and will compare the results to my own paper files, and let you know how it works)

3) This is my favorite feature of the Veterans eBenefits system.  Veterans can download a variety of Veterans Letters - for example, civil service preference eligibility statements, Benefits Verification Letters (for state and county benefits, as well as some private company benefits for veterans), and Service Verification Letters.  A couple of clicks, and there it is, on your computer screen.

4)  Veterans can request information about Veterans benefits available from their state, with just a few clicks. This is helpful for newly service-connected Veterans and Disabled Veterans that are planning to move to a new state.

5) Other features allow Veterans to manage certain health care records, to track Compensation and Pension (C&P) Exam dates, and more.

I recommend that every Veteran that has access to the internet and a computer sign up for an eBenefits Account.  Veteran clients of the Attig Law Firm have been able to use this site to gauge when they might expect a decision on their VA Benefits claim or appeal.

It is very important that the Attig Law Firm notes that each and every Veteran's claim is different. It is best to consult with a lawyer familiar with VA Disability claims and benefits or a Veterans Service Organization to examine your particular case.  If you would like to discuss your VA claim with a lawyer who handles VA Benefits and Disability Appealscontact the Attig Law Firm, PLLC, for a free consultationwith a VA Benefits attorney.
